WHAT REMAINS IS FUTURE No.3 (2020)

MR. SEKSARIT THANAPRASITTIKUL

DOWNLOAD

Introduction

This project is a continuous progress from the project “What Remains Is Future”, previouslyexhibited in 2018. The phrase suggests that beautiful future can be created from what remains in thepresent time. The creation is an interpretation of the statement into design concept with an aim to fnd new possibilities in fashion design.

The project is aimed at visualizing the beautiful future created from what remains, through fashion design perspective. The idea will be reinterpreted within the fashion design context, aiming to find new possibilities in design methodology and to create new design in shapes, forms and constructions. This year, the project is aimed to emphasize its core idea through different experimental approach.

The core idea of the previous project involves an investigation of the remaining parts in fashion design practice. Initial research shows that wastes, including unusable materials and disposable pieces are created from cutting fabric into clothing parts during garment production. Considering those left-over pieces as the remaining parts, the methodology of the project involves a transformation remaining parts into something new through experimental approaches, for example, an integration of left-over fabrics into the garment construction or clothing parts. This year, the process is done by different experimental approaches.

According to the symposium title “Mind the Gap”, the project started by exploring the relation between the term “Gap” and fashion design practice. During cutting process, when pattern parts are laid on fabrics for cutting, the space between each pattern parts, including unused areas and excessive fabrics inevitably exists. The empty space between each pattern parts can be considered as the “Gap” in fashion design practice. Therefore, the design process in this project involves experiments on the space in between each pattern parts during cutting process.

The experiment on the jacket is done by gathering the space around the pattern into the
original shape. Fabric around the pattern part is infused into the infusible fabric which had been cut in the original shape of each part. As a result, excessive fabric created wrinkles and drapery surface on each pattern parts.

As for trousers, the process is done by experimenting on the pattern construction. With an aim to reduce the excessive fabric around pattern parts, the front panel of the trousers is extended from its original shape. The enlarged front panel is further developed by folding into new construction.

The left-over fabric from cutting the jacket is transformed into decoration pieces for the shirt. In contrast to the white background, black irregular shapes of the left-over fabric highlight the gap in between.

Traditional tailoring techniques, such as basting stitches, padding and hand-sewing are used. Basting stitches are left on the piece in order to refect the beauty of what remains from the process of making clothes.

MIND THE GAP

A series
Screw in a Lightbulb
The Creation of Fake History
Let It Be MEME .
Thug Life

Mr. Samuel R. Forkner

DOWNLOAD

Introduction

The piece is displayed with a frame around a fatscreen television. The televisionscreen could be as small as 27 inches diagonally or up to 60 inches. The framesurrounding the television will be 50% of the height and 20% of the width.

This work consists of high-concept video-art presented in a frame as if it were a painting. The screen shows very-short flms on a loop with space in between them. These are Framed Memes.

The focus is on the creation of meaning from something which already has a meaning, especially since the viewer has seen at least some of the visuals before. Viral videos are those clips which have been shared so many times they are everywhere. The new meme relies on the fact that the viewer already has an idea associated with it. The new meaning comes as a visual gag and a sense of humor.

1. Screw in a Lightbulb – two memes are combined at the beginning. The cat that can’t handle a fower and the Interstellar Docking Scene Parody. By juxtaposition the two memes create the sense of something newsworthy, even if it is really only trivial. Then a talking head emphasizes just how important this is as it morphs into a
devilish fgure as everything burns up.

2. The Creation of Fake History – the frequently used nuclear bomb testing footage from the Los Alamos National Laboratory is the subject here. The use of music and montage creates a layer of contradiction. As if it is just a bright sunny day in the archives of a flm from the 1930s well before WWII.

3. Let It Be Meme – the footage of the Tsar Bomba is undoubtably viral. It was being recycled in documentaries even before New Media exploded onto the scene. I have mixed it with a clip that went viral from Australia’s Got Talent. The reaction of an audience member with mouth-open-wide, really wide, originally contained the
expression of surprise. Here I transform that expression into horror, before distortingthe face just as far as it can go. The face-shape changing is a reference to the Content Aware Scale work on YouTube.

4. Thug Life – is a series of videos made by many different people. The clips are very short and freeze at the climax, then an animated pair of sunglasses and a joint fall into place. My contribution to the Thug Life series comes from a very popular meme: the blooper-reel from the 1999 kids TV special “Goodnight Moon and Other
Sleepytime Tales.” It was uploaded to YouTube in 2011 and quickly went viral. This video was used for countless parodies. Creators played drums to it, guitar and piano, turned it into songs in various genres, made behind-scenes-footage of it and more. My piece uses looping techniques both musically and visually and is framed between two Wallies ( a meme on its own).

The meme is about creation of meaning from something which already has a meaning, especially since the viewer has seen at least some of the visuals before. Viral videos are those clips which have been shared so many times they are everywhere. The new meme relies on the fact that the viewer will already have an idea associated with the viral video which has been seen so many times. The new meaning will come as a visual gag with a sense of humor.

The juxtaposition of images compounds their meaning. It is easily accomplished by cutting different clips with a clear meaning together. It can also be done by superimposition. The frst way is from the realm of flm editing, but the second is from the world of animation. If the image from one meme is juxtaposed against another the artist may pick and choose from shades of expression. Eventually some of those new pictures and montage sequences stand out on their own.

By recreating some popular memes, I was able to increase the resolution of the video making it able to be displayed much bigger. I used all of my tricks as an editor to fip and copy images, change colors, sizes and durations. During this process, some magical moments were discovered – moments that popped up as worthy of a tributary.

Memes are a popular form of visual expression created by internet denizens, enabled by the phenomenon of “new media” that started in the middle of the last decade, the Noughties. The viewers of memes, the audience, are also users of a computer. On their devices they had a limited ability to cut and paste or add imagery and text but this was enough inspire market-fooding proportions of veryshort flms, often self-made humorous clips. They were enabled by cell-phones equipped with Vine or similar video-streaming software. With the spread of mobile devices in the last ffteen years, the average Joe has created millions of clips of something going wrong, someone blowing up, or something unexpected happening. The most
sensational are the most shared. Because of their constant availability, they frequently show up in advertising, flm and mainstream media which adds to their ease of recycling on the internet.

Memes are really made using only the most basic techniques, such as fgure cutout or stick fgure animation. But even though memes rely on basics, multiple visual layers can be compounded to create something new. Something more cartoon-like and malleable for the artist.

Nowadays, YouTube has settled down to be more of a regular TV channel and life has gone back to normal. The casual viewer doesn’t need to search for content anymore as it is piped-up hot by everything from Facebook to Line to Spotify. But there has been an irreparable change in the life of flm since the creation of newmedia, back in the day, back in 2005. And that was the creation of Memes: short video clips of a viral nature.

Introduction

Oddly as humans gain more convenience through technological advancements, the further away we are to “peace”. The more we can achieve through inventions the more our society sinks deeper and deeper into an unfathomable pit of chaos. However, throughout history, one thing’s never changed. Like cool water to a warm climate, “Dharma” has been soothing our souls for generations

A — Gap

Mr. Phanas Phokthavi

Introduction

A— Gap because of the interval of ages looks simple but so complicated in the real life, especially in a family. In their view, parents expect their children to understand what they think as their children had already been adults. Serious suggestions which are full of experiences may not match the small kids. Many things children do not realize are just because of difference of ages, which includes generation differences.(Idler, 2013)

The journey of age makes us change. Diverse information is loaded into us from
everywhere along with our increasing wrinkles. Our thought, adherence, and self defense are all created along the way while the children lives are just start. Therefore, difference of age is an important factor to make A— Gap. The gap is always there. However, it is a part of our lives.

5 from 6 pieces in this set of art work are created to represent the trace of age in my
body, at the same time revealing the thought of putting artistic experiences, composition, abstraction which are enlightened during the travel of age into them. Their titles are

No. 1. Pulse
No.2. Wrinkle
No.3. Finger
No.4. Palm Pattern

No.6. Crow’s Feet

While the other pieces in this set was created by my eldest son, Wara Phokthavi, when
his age was around 5 years old. The human body was simple drawn plus his T-shirt if he felt cold. That is what the kid sees.(Mentalfloss.com, 2020) This piece’s title is

No.5. A—Gap

This set of art work demonstrates the gap of ages in the obvious view. However, in behind, it also represents the complex gap between ages that is outside the eyes. And the last, it also portrays that differences can stay together.

Introduction

In the past people live in the sanctuary of nature and live with harmony. Time goes on, people invent several technology to serve their convenient, with out the care and destroy an environment. The more they do that the more they destroy, that causes the problem of air pollution.

Nowadays the PM2.5 comes. It is a worldwide problem. It effect all people daily life. People have to take care themselves more. Everybody wear mask to protect PM 2.5 when stay outside that has never happen before. Especially when Covid 19 came in 2020. It spread all over the world, can be easily sick by no distancing and die.

An awareness of this situation give an idea of making art has its purpose to give the message to the viewer to be careful of PM 2.5 and Covid 19. This art piece using tiny color dots that means DUST to make a graphic art and use a computer technique to control its movement, making like the dust floating in the air, the title of this art piece is “ Motion Graphic by the Dust “.

The discovery of making this art piece need to start by manual experiment, during the time of experiment can find the size of the dots that look like real dust. If the color dots look big the picture will look thick and heavy. If it is so tiny it will look so soft that makes the visual not easily see. An experiment show that some dot can easily see on the computer screen but not easily seen on the projector screen so should be careful to use the computer technique, especially using proper lighting tools to make a fine piece.

Introduction

This project was given by The Central Embassy Department store incorporated with Projectt
studio and T’la Frame Studio as to make a short 2d animation in order to promote Central Embassy new campaign.

My role as a chief of animated department is involved a pre-production process such as storyboard design, animatic and design how all the character will pose and move in this short animation.

As this project has given me an experience of working with a big group of people and also to corporate with another studio. Also, it has given me a chance to see how me and my partners grew through these 4 months project.

Gap is Growth

The pins of life can be caused by events that are arranged in a row. But between the pins that were intended and inadvertently are all will consist of many spaces. In which each space has its own function. Gazing at those gaps in the past story must be a precious experience. Because the present tense often makes us look only at the events that are arranged closely together. Sometimes the distance (Gap) between those events is the main variable of growth and learning

AR Eco Lantern

Mr.Pasin Thanasin

DOWNLOAD

Introduction

If you have a chance to watch Disney’s Animated film called “Tangled” You will fall in love with a Floating lantern scene. This scene is so lovely and romantic! Actually these floating lanterns are a well-loved tradition in multiple cultures, and are used around the world to celebrate holidays, make wishes or mourn the passing of a loved one. They’ve become so popular, in fact, that entire festivals are centered on large groups of people releasing the glowing lanterns into the night sky.

Though they are undoubtedly beautiful, even the biodegradable lanterns can be incredibly harmful to both the environment and wildlife. Sky lantern litter takes quite some time to decompose, and the wire frames have been known to strangle and maim wild animals and livestock. They also pose a significant fire hazard.

This is the Gap between Beauty and Ecology. So this is how this project were created.

To keep this tradition beauty floating Lantern, I chose to use Augmented
Reality(AR) to create an art work. This technic is really useful and suit to this situation. Not only fill the gap between Beauty and ecology but also fill the gap between traditional and technology.
